Digging is our expertise.
While hiring extra machinery incurs additional costs, the use of small excavators can really speed up the renovation process and hence save time and reduce labor costs. A small digger with operator could cost between $80 to $120/hr + GST and it’s usually necessary to hire a small dump truck with driver along with it, which can add up to an extra $90 to $150/hr + GST.
If you get a fixed price quote from your builder, these costs should be factored in. However, there can be unforeseen soil related problems such as striking rocks or large tree roots that can slow down work and increase costs.
Rubbish removal costs are often forgotten about in the planning stage, though for a large-scale excavation project they could add up quickly and blow your budget (having a contingency budget is key). Access to the building site has a big impact on the cost. For example, if site access is limited it may take two or three times as long to get the excavated soil out.
The cost for your earthmoving works could vary depending on the specific conditions of your site, and its proximity to a tip site. However to give you an understanding of what your proposing might cost, a simple bulk excavation within half an hour drive of a tip site, would typically cost $60 – $80+GST per cubic meter of spoil excavated and removed.
A trickier job on the other hand, for example a basement excavation that must be dug out and load up onto a truck, again on a site within half an hour drive of a tip site, would typically cost $120 – $160+GST per cubic meter of spoil excavated and removed.
For a quick approximation of what your earthworks might cost, take the length of your excavation and multiply this by the width and then the [average] depth, to provide yourself with a rough indication of the cubic meter volume of spoil to be removed from site.
